Sword Art Online by IBM?!


IBM Japan announced new Sword Art Online project yesterday. The company has planned to hold an event for its alpha test in Japan.

Sword Art online is an virtual reality MMORPG based anime  is a 2009 Japanese light novel series written by Reki Kawahara and illustrated by abec. There are eight manga adaptations of the series, all written by Reki Kawahara and published by ASCII Media Works. Sword Art Online: Aincrad, illustrated by Tamako Nakamura, was serialized in Dengeki Bunko Magazine between the September 2010 and May 2012 issues.

An anime adaptation of Sword Art Online was announced at Dengeki Bunko Autumn Festival 2011, along with Reki Kawahara’s other light novel series. According to Oricon, Sword Art Online was the top selling light novel series of 2012, with eight volumes figuring among the top selling light novels.

Unlike previous game adaptations  Sword Art Online: The Beginning will actually be a VR MMO game, played by wearing a VR headset as shown in the anime itself. The movement of the characters will be controlled by a VR headset. A selected 208 people will be playing alongside one another on the announced “Alpha test” to showcase the potential of IBM Cognitive Computing in the realm of gaming in Japan.

The huge fan base is the major reason as to why SAO has always been game designers dream.
